What Is a Leader The leader is the dancer who gently shows where the movement will go. They give clear signals—using their hands, body, and timing—to invite the other dancer to move in a certain way. They start the dance. They decide when to step, turn, or change direction. They use body movement (not words) to guide the partner. A good leader doesn’t force or drag—they move clearly and with care, like saying, “Let’s go this way together.” What Is a Follower The follower is the dancer who listens to those signals and responds with their own movement. They don’t guess—they feel the leader’s guidance and move with them, in the same rhythm and direction. They pay close attention to touch and timing. They follow smoothly, adding their own energy and style. They move with control, not just being led—they dance back. A good follower is not passive—they are active, expressive, and always ready. Can the Roles Change? Yes! Anyone can be a leader or a follower. Some people learn both. It doesn’t depend on gender—just on who wants to guide and who wants to respond in the moment. In social dancing, partners sometimes even switch roles during the same song. Salsa Foundations Learn the essential steps, rhythm and movement principles that form the foundation of Salsa dancing. Timing and Musicality Develop confidence moving in time with Salsa music, improving rhythm, coordination and musical awareness. Partner Connection Explore how to dance comfortably with a partner, building trust, communication and shared movement. Basic Footwork Practise beginner-friendly footwork patterns that help you feel more grounded, confident and in control. Turns and Combinations Learn simple turns and step combinations that bring variety, flow and energy to your dancing. Lead and Follow Technique Understand the basics of leading and following, helping you move with greater clarity, confidence and ease. Understanding Our Salsa & Bachata Curriculum Salsa and bachata are beautifully rich dances, full of technique, musicality, and finesse and like any true art form, they take time to develop and refine. Each course within our curriculum is designed to be repeated, often more than once. You’ll work closely alongside your peers and your tutor, who will guide you in mastering every element of the material. When you’re ready, you’ll receive a sign-off to progress to the next level, ensuring a solid and confident foundation at every stage.
